No More Zebra Cakes

No more zebra cakes! So lots of big news around the manicdote household. First of all (and most importantly) Terry was diagnosed with type-2 diabetes. This means a lot of changes for Terry…well, both of us, really. First of all Terry has had to cut out all the soda (Mt. Dew) that he used to drink. We’ve looked long and hard but currently “Coke Zero” has been the best-tasting choice for him. And I have to agree, it does taste pretty darn good! If blindfolded I’m not sure I could tell the difference.

The doctor seems to be hopeful that through diet, excersie and possibly some diabetes medication that he will be able to control it all. So cross your fingers…the “South Beach Diet” was recommended to us by his doctor and today is our first day on it. As you may or may not know, on the South Beach Diet one consumes more low-glycemic carbs, or good carbs, such as whole grains and vegetables. These are absorbed gradually into the blood stream as to not trigger the spikes in your sugar/insulin cycle.

I’m also doing the diet with Terry because (A) It’s supportive, (B) I do all the cooking and I’m not going to cook two entirely different meals, and additionally (C) I could stand to loose a few pounds myself. We’re in what’s called “Phase One” which lasts 2 weeks. It’s the most restrictive of the phases but it’s full of a lot of stuff I actually LIKE to eat so I don’t really feel like I’m missing out. I had eggs for breakfast, a salad with grilled chicken for lunch, and I’m going to have steak and broccoli for dinner with a dessert of jello. I’m not hungry. I know I’m only on day one but I’m pleased that I’m not already wishing for food that I can’t eat. I know those feelings will come but with someone actually doing the diet with me…I feel much more confident than I had in the past when it was just me. You know?

Outside of that not much else is going on. We’re still deep in planning for our upcoming trip to Disneyworld which happens in 13 days. HOORAY!!!

Oh, like I tripped and fell the other day. Well, about a week and a half a go. I fell right on my knee as I walked through a doorway – I swear I flew up into the air before soaring down and landing entirely on my left knee. I was wearing jeans so I got rug burn all over (painful!) and right now it’s like that sickly mottled yellow-purple bruise color all over it. But about a week ago I noticed that my foot was swollen.

I didn’t really think much about it as it’s been SO HOT here and humid here, but I started noticing that they were swollen in the MORNING! And my foot was getting so swollen it HURT.  So my doctor wants me to have an X-Ray taken of it. Yikes!

I’m not afraid of having X-Rays taken but I’m afraid that one of the little bones in my foot might have broken – I can’t be wearing a cast right now…I’m going to Disneyworld! I hope it’s just a bad sprain or something. Although I just don’t know how I managed to sprain it. When I fell, I fell on my knee…I don’t remember hitting my foot? However the knee might have hurt so much that it overrided any pain in my foot. Who knows. Just keep me in your thoughts!

*sigh* Oh, although on a happier note…Ruki is today’s PUG-A-DAY – ! Go see her and vote for her . She must be numero uno! My baby girl deserves no less. Click here to go see and vote for her! Thanks in advance! http://www.pugaday.com/

In conclusion, here’s a picture Terry took of Napoleon. It cracks me up because I love the expression (“What…another photo? I’m trying to sleep here!”) on Poley’s face. I also love that he’s using one of their bricks as a pillow (we’ve got bricks acting as stairs so little Ruki can climb into the litterbox). And don’t pity him. They’ve gone through about 6 beds (some EXPENSIVE!) in the last 6 months, and ruined all of them. So no more beds for them right now. They have a nice bath mat to sleep on. Once they get past their puppy-chewing-destroying-stage they’ll get a bed again but right now they’re bad little puggies and have to sleep on the floor. Although I don’t make them use the bricks as a pillow. That’s his choice. That’s how he rolls. Don’t you judge him!

Oh, and you can see his favorite toy, the “keys” in the picture- he’s even sleeping with them in his paws grasp (probally so Ruki can’t get them). Other favorite toys are “Sir Elephante” and the “Doggie Dumbell” you can see in the background.

See what you\'ve reduced me to?

  1. Wow! Sounds like quite a week for you. Hope that you find a FABULOUS job, should you decide to start looking.

  2. Wow. That was an action packed post. I am so sorry to hear about Terry. Hopefully the diet and exercise will resolve the diabetes problem. That would be super. I feel sorry for your boss, but if that job is as crappy for him as it is for you, he might be better off fired. Poor guy though – I hope this doesn’t hinder his ability to get another job. I would file a countersuit against the company and/or that biotch who filed that false claim.

  3. I’ve heard that a leg/foot cast at Disneyland/world is not such a bad thing… Supposedly, you get to go to the front of the lines… Could almost be a benefit in disguise…

  4. Wow, what an action packed post. We hope that Terry is okay and that you both do well on the South Beach Diet. It is always better to do something like that together, that way someone won’t say, “let’s have pizza” when they KNOW you are trying to lose weight.
As for the boss & sexual harrassment, yes, mom has heard similiar stupis stories. A female employee being told to dress nice for the big meeting with the clients and suing for that! She always wore tee shirts and jeans and it was supposed to be a professional meeting. What are you supposed to say.
We say it is time to find another job. What do you do, mom wants to know,
As for the foot, the x-ray won’t hurt, but you may have to stay off it for a while, and keep it elevated. Hopefully, it will not be something bad.
    Take care.

  5. Oh wow!! My dad was diagnosed last year with type 2 diabetes. The diet has helped him alot (when he follows it) and made him feel so much better. He has lost a lot of weight too with walking and eating well.
If you guys like coke zero, try the sprite zero, it is even better!!

That really sucks about the knee, you may have pinched a vein or something? hmm.. but if you have a walking cast you can get into the front of lines, your tan line will suck though!!
Yes that really does suck about your job.. maybe it is time to start looking closer to home??
Gus sleeps with his toys too but they are usually in his mouth!! I try to pull them out but he has a good bite on them!!

  6. We would all be better off to follow a diabetic diet. It is hard at first but you will find treats that are legal! I have done it (while pregnant) and I am a bad sugar addict. It might be a little hard at Disney World -lots of temptation! Drink a lot of water and take your snacks with you into the park. There are some places that serve food that is healthy – Try the “Land” at EPCOT. I am jealous -we love Disney World! As for the job- start looking- it is always easier to find a job when you already have one! Sounds like you need a job that will challenge your creativity and leadership more! Good Luck!

  7. Sorry to hear about Terry and your foot! Hope the diet goes well for you – my friend and her parents did it and they LOVED it, said it really worked for them.
Hope you have a nice weekend after your crappy week!

  8. Allie,
There is alot of good food on the South Beach Diet. We like some of them so well we have made them for dinner guests. I believe you’ll find the diet (as far as diets go) were easy. . . . However WW has the advantage of having more variety (carbs you carve) via the point systems. But this is an excellent diet for Type II Diabetes. One of my co-workders was diagnoised within the last year, initally he monitored his blood many times during the day, and he often remarked he felt like a “human pin cushion”. He has found the best control with South Beach Diet & exercise. He walks at lunch everyday and he & his wife have taken up walking on the weekends. On my suggestion, he purchased “Afoot & Afield in SD County” and they are having a great time. He has found that the walking has helped him control his weight and diabetes the most. . . . . We wish you & Terry the best and you’ll be in our prayers. . .
    Love,
    Dad

  9. That is disgusting what that girl did to a perfectly good boss (and they’re hard to come by).
Hope your knee gets to feeling better and your swelling goes down. If there is no pain when you walk, it is probably okay. Adorable Poley pic.
Tuffy decided to start his own blog! 🙂
